Her suitors were many.
No wonder. She was bright, charming and lovely—a tour de force.
I knew I had to tell her how I felt—even as I was sure she already knew.
She was kind in her rebuff, with words of flattery and regret.
And although I was hurt, I knew I had been right in telling her.
I would have regretted it my whole life if I had not.
