Lacey, dead. Shantella, dead. Goldirocks in the hospital, the cops say she might live.
Mac Daddy was real dead.
They told me that if I had come back a couple of minutes earlier,
I'd of ended up riddled with bullets like my friends.
I thought about how I had stood in line at the deli,
the old lady in front of me was taking forever just to order and pay.
I was cursing her stupid ass under my breath and thinking how the gray hairs are just taking up space and how I wished the dumb cow would get out my way already!
She saved my life.
I whispered to her, wherever she was,
thank you and that I was sorry for what I thought and the way I acted.
What do I do now, I wondered.
I knew what Mac would say—"Get it up off the bed and get on with it!"
He was always saying that.
But I remembered something else that he told me a while back.
It surprised me at the time and I didn't really understand it.
He had been sitting around drinking all day and out of the blue he looked at me and said,
"Baby girl, the world puts us where it puts us, but you—" he pointed at me, it kinda scared me,
"you could be somewhere else. For you, it could be something else."
"Sure, Daddy, sure," I said, and poured him another drink.
Now, sitting in the dark, alone and scared and wondering what to do, I realized--
it was time for something else.
