I became more and more bound by their spectre.
The memories of happy moments and the witnessing of decent character
helped ease the grip but still,
I grew increasingly immobilized by the vagaries of what seemed like a cruel, haphazard universe.
Until one night, sitting alone in my captivity, I realized that my impressions,
both beautiful and ugly--
were glimpses of something far greater.
They were part of me but not me, and they were not the whole story.
The bonds loosened.
I still believe in paradise.
