Would I survive? I wondered.
Would I be up to the fearsome tests that were foretold by
The Kamodian Warlock?
Would I find The Great Ancient River and the peace it brought?
As the afternoon waned, I came upon a crossing.
There, standing with an ominous casualness, was a great beauty wielding unbelievable power.
I steeled myself. I knew what I had to do.
I approached and called out,
"Oh, Incredible Guardian, favor me with your deep, mysterious riddle
that I may search my mind and soul for the wisdom to answer—and gain the right to pass!"
"Mmm?" she responded rather distractedly, "Oh, right. Deep, mysterious riddle. Let's see now, uh,
TWO PRIESTS AND A RABBI WALK INTO A BAR...!"
"Wait, wait!" I cried. "That can't be right!
A riddle! A deep, mysterious riddle! Not some lame joke!"
"Oh, of course," she answered, "A riddle."
"WHAT IS BLACK AND WHITE AND READ ALL ...!?"
"No, no, no, no!" I interrupted.
"That can't be right, either! Where is the profundity? Where is the cosmic insight?
I need to be challenged so that I might find The Truth within myself
and be blessed with the gift of passage!"
"You wish to pass?" she asked, standing aside. "Then you have only to—proceed."
I thought for a moment and then boldy strode forward, crossing over to the other side.
I was unsure of what had happened and what it meant, but I had made it.
I started to walk on.
I heard a rustling behind me. I looked over my shoulder
and saw that it was the Incredible Guardian following me!
"Hey, hey!" she was saying. "HOW MANY BLONDES DOES IT TAKE TO SCREW IN A LIGHT BULB?!"
I quickened my pace.
"Hey, wait up!" she called out. "I'm here all week!"
I started to run. In the distance behind me I heard her voice shouting out,
"THERE ONCE WAS AN ETHEREAL DEMIGOD FROM NANTUCKET...!"
I have yet to find The Great Ancient River but I'm counting my blessings.
