Water And Blood

8/9/2093

Shots Of Silver
Michael and I had been happy these last three years,
living next to the ocean
that we both cherished so much.

When we fell in Love, things didn't go too well with either of our families.
Most of them
didn't  accept it—didn't accept us.

We decided we were going to live our lives and take all the joy we could find.

When Michael got sick, the sorrow was overwhelming.
He was braver than I was,

all but insisting that I find the strength I needed somewhere inside.

Friends, bless them, helped us more than I can say but I wondered if I could survive;
I wondered if I would survive the heartbreak.

One day, near the end, there was a buzz at the door.
I opened it and there stood—my mother.

I hadn't seen her for years.
My father had made it clear that I didn't exist anymore,

and as close as she and I were—she loved him—had always been an obedient wife.

I knew it had been difficult for her.

The first words out of her mouth were,
"Oh Jason, sweetheart, I'm sorry I didn't come sooner!"

The look on her face told me everything about how she had felt
and the price she had paid to be here now.

We hugged and both started weeping. "Mom," I choked, "you came."

"Of course, I came," she replied with a sob, squeezing me harder,--

"You're my son. My Son."
